Understanding the physical and chemical properties of industrial waste using USEPA's SW846 analytical techniques allow disposers to determine whether or not the waste is classified as hazardous for disposal purposes. Material testing requirements are mandated by state regulations and landfill permit conditions.

Waste characterization testing is at the core of Trinity Lab's testing expertise. Trinity Analytical Laboratories, Inc. is NELAC accredited in such techniques as the Toxicity Characteristic Leach Procedure (TCLP, USEPA 1311). TCLP is an acronym for toxic characteristic leaching procedure and is used to simulate conditions in a landfill where individual constituents can leach out of the solid waste and into the groundwater. The analytical results are compared to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency’s hazardous waste limits.

Other accredited tests include reactivity (USEPA 335.3, 376.2), ignitability (USEPA 1010), corrosivity (USEPA 1110). Landfills frequently request additional testing including paint filter (USEPA 9095), total petroleum hydrocarbons (USEPA 8260 and 8015M, OA1, OA2), metals (USEPA 6010), volatile organic compounds (USEPA 8260), semivolatile organic compounds (USEPA 8270) and occasionally pesticides and herbicides (USEPA 8082 and 8151) before accepting waste materials into their landfills.
